Artist Statement
The impetus for my painting is the relationship between abstraction and figuration, blurring the boundaries between these two approaches. It’s about the balance between the freedom of form and its grounding in reality. Recognizable and schematic forms and figures are used to establish a connection with the viewer and open up narrative possibilities. References to art history are often made. Through the use of these quotations and references, a connection between past and present is created, opening up new perspectives on traditional themes. The interplay with representational elements creates a multi-layered quality. The theme is the constant contradiction of human life. This is underscored by impasto paint application, dynamism in the formal language, and a painterly gesture that draws the viewer into the painting process.
